Why Prioritizing Self-Care Makes You a Better Mom
The Wake-Up Call Every Mom Needs: A Simple Conversation That Hit Me Hard"
As moms, we’re so used to being the backbone of our families that we often forget about one very important person: ourselves. This realization hit me like a ton of bricks during a simple conversation with my daughter the other day.
I wasn’t feeling great—nothing major, just that run-down feeling we all know too well. I casually said, “I think I’m getting sick,” not expecting much of a response. But my daughter looked at me with concern and said, “You’re always taking care of us that you don’t take care of yourself.”
Her words stopped me in my tracks.

The Invisible Load of Motherhood
As moms, we carry so much. We juggle work, school schedules, meals, laundry, bedtime routines, and a million other things. It’s easy to forget that we’re human too. We get tired. We get sick. And sometimes, we just need a break.
But how often do we actually allow ourselves that break?
In that moment, my daughter’s words felt like a mirror. She saw me clearly—someone who gives everything to her family, often at the expense of her own well-being. And the truth is, I don’t think I’ve ever stopped to think about how that looks from her perspective.
What Are We Teaching Our Kids?
Our kids are always watching. They see how we handle stress, how we push through exhaustion, and how we prioritize everyone else before ourselves. While this shows them love and dedication, it also teaches them that self-care isn’t important.
That’s not what I want for my children. I want them to grow up understanding that taking care of yourself isn’t selfish—it’s essential. I want my daughters to know it’s okay to pause, to rest, and to prioritize their mental and physical health.
But to teach them that, I need to start living it.
The Power of Small Changes
This conversation was a wake-up call, and I’m committed to making small but meaningful changes. Here’s what I’ve started doing:
Scheduling Rest: I block out time for myself, whether it’s a 10-minute break or 30 minutes of journaling after the kids are in bed.
Setting Boundaries: Learning to say “no” to things that drain me or stretch me too thin.
Modeling Self-Care: Letting my kids see me take care of myself—whether it’s exercising, meditating, or simply sitting down with a book.
Asking for Help: I remind myself that it’s okay to lean on others. We weren’t meant to do it all alone.
Mamas, This Is Your Reminder
If you’re reading this, I want you to take a moment to check in with yourself. When was the last time you truly rested? When was the last time you did something just for you?
We’re so good at being there for everyone else, but we can’t pour from an empty cup. Taking care of yourself isn’t just about you—it’s about showing your family that you matter too.
Let’s normalize the idea that moms need care and love, just like everyone else. Because we do.
So, to my daughter—thank you for the reminder. And to every mama out there reading this, let this be your reminder too. You deserve to feel good, to rest, and to thrive. ❤️
